Frequently Asked Questions

Can you assess my student to determine areas of need?

Yes.  I have several assessments that will help me determine areas of reading need your student may have.  If you have a particular area in which you would like me to provide support, I may administer an assessment to help me determine strengths and challenges that will focus my instruction in that area.  I do this because it is important to me that I not waste your student's time or your money covering areas in which your student is strong.  All of my assessments are informal in nature and generally cause little to no stress because I present them as simply another reading activity.  Additionally, I constantly adjust my teaching to address areas of need I may notice as I am working with your student.

Do you teach writing?

Yes.  While my specialty and my teaching strength are reading; reading and writing are interrelated skills.  If you would like your student to have support in writing, we can work on any or all aspects of writing from idea generation and planning through drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.  We can also work on writing about reading.  Additionally, I address spelling and handwriting within the context of word work and writing.

Please Note -- While I occasionally support middle school writers who need extra help with their writing, my teaching strength lies more with elementary aged writers.

Can you help my student with math?

Yes.  While math is not my specialty, I can support your young elementary student with math concepts.  I do not have a math curriculum but am happy to support your student with their math homework or with a math curriculum that you provide.  I will refer you to a fellow tutor if your 5th grader or middle school student needs math support.  (Because I, too, have strengths and challenges!)

Does my student need to be vaccinated against COVID or to wear a mask during tutoring?

No.  While it is my preference that all students I work with are vaccinated, I do not require it.  I no longer require students to be masked during tutoring.  That said, please do not send your sick kids to me.  Thank you!

Do you offer Zoom sessions?

No.  I am no longer offering Zoom sessions for any students.  This was never an ideal venue for teaching or learning.  I apologize for any inconvenience.
